IP addresses, explained simply

What is an IP address?

A number that identifies your connection on the internet, like a postal address for data. Websites need it to send pages back to you.

Public vs private IP

Your public IP is what websites see, usually shared by everyone on your Wi-Fi. Your private IP (like 192.168.1.5) only works inside your home or office network.

IPv4 vs IPv6

IPv4 looks like 103.21.244.0. IPv6 is newer and longer, like 2405:201:a::1. Many networks, including most Indian mobile networks, give you both.

What is my IP FAQ

By using this tool you agree to its Terms of Use and privacy notice.

No. An IP address usually shows only your city or your internet provider's location. Only your provider can link it to your account, and they share that only with legal authority.

IP locations are estimates based on where your provider registers its addresses. Mobile networks and VPNs often show a different city.

Most home and mobile connections get a dynamic IP that changes from time to time, for example when you restart your router or switch networks.

Use a trusted VPN or the Tor browser. Websites will then see the VPN's IP address instead of yours.

No. This tool shows your IP to you and doesn't save it. See the privacy notice for details.
