How it works

Use the solar generation calculator in 3 steps

  1. STEP 1

    Enter the system size

Type the size of your solar system in kW, for example 3, 5 or 10 kW.

  2. STEP 2

    Pick your city

Search your city or use your location. Sunlight data comes from PVGIS satellite records averaged over many years.

  3. STEP 3

    See the units

Get the average kWh per day, month and year, generation for each month, peak sun hours and the best panel angle.

Between about 3 and 5 units (kWh) a day in most of India, the Middle East, Africa, Australia and the southern US, and 2 to 3 a day in northern Europe. Enter your city to see the exact figure for your place.

Roughly 18 to 25 kWh a day in sunny countries and 10 to 14 kWh in places like the UK or Germany. Generation changes by season, which the monthly chart shows.

The hours of full-strength sunshine a place gets in a day, on average. 5 peak sun hours means the panels get as much energy as 5 hours of bright midday sun.

Clouds, rain and short days reduce sunlight. In India, June to September usually give the lowest output; in Europe it's November to January.

From PVGIS, the European Commission's free solar database, which uses satellite and weather records for most of the world.
