How to work out the cost of solar panels

Start with how much electricity you use: the units (kWh) on your bill, or the bill amount divided by your price per unit. Multiply by 12 for a year.

Divide that by how much 1 kW of panels makes in a year where you live. In sunny places that's about 1,400–1,700 kWh; in northern Europe about 900–1,000 kWh. The answer is the system size in kW.

Multiply the size in watts by the installed cost per watt for your country and subtract any subsidy. Divide that by your yearly savings to get the payback time. The calculator does all of this with real sunlight data for your city.
